So last night for the Survivor premiere we found out that Austin Carty was in town. How sweet would it be to have a contestant from last year's show at Fields' house to tell stories and be the man? Enter Austin Carty. He happened to be in town and came down from LA for the night. So cool! Every commerical break we paused it an interrogated him about the show. There were some great stories, how fun would it be to be there.
What a fun premiere! The show was great (only 1 hour?), there was plenty of intrigue about the racial divisions, though it might be too early to tell if it will be one of the better seasons. I love how they characterize people within seconds - did you see how fast Billy was made into the fat, inept, rocker guy? He's gone next week, I'm telling you right now.
The early buzz around the office is that several new people watched the show, and old faithfuls are definitely back for more. Wouldn't surprise me a bit to hear that the ratings were up 10% or more. Fun night!

Forget Survivor! You need to be watching ME, your faithful listener, on season three of The Biggest Loser!!! (grin) I mean, yeah, survivor's cool and all ... but Biggest Loser has a real live (fat) youth pastor on it this year! What other reality show can claim that??? I'm just sayin'.

Come on, Griff! Don't be Mr Nice! Tell us what you thought of the show! Stir up the pot! Make a comment that will draw a Marko reply! Pretend there's a green screen behind you, visible to all, and someone is shouting that Star Trek kicks butt over Star Wars! What did ya think of the race format?
PS: Quit hitting on the celebs. They don't like bein' touched. - At 9/15/2006, Unknown said...

Rob, I'm not sure I've seen enough yet to make anything too bold.
So far?
The race format is great ... a little gimicky perhaps, and I think it does encourage stereotypes for the weak-minded. It might be unwise to encourage people to sink to the lowest common denominator.
However, it could backfire on those people, when they see someone they resent do something totally unexpected. When they see someone they have a preconceived idea about depart vastly from the stereotype, when they finally see someone as a human instead of a particular race of human. Stereotypes will only be reinforced if the players play to the stereotypes.
So I think this will work, I really do. The best way to talk about something is to go for it head on. This is doing just that ... people for the first few weeks will talk about racial stuff, then it will blur, and hopefully we'll appreciate the players for who they are, not by their color.
I'm more than willing to eat this later, but from right here this is a great and bold programming choice.
Marko?
